Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day, I want to honor men and women soldiers, but I think I want to specifically highlight some of our women soldiers and their struggles. I’m not saying that our men soldiers don’t deserve respect, but being as this is a women’s issues blog, I’d like to highlight some female soldiers today.

Women soldiers have been serving in the military for a long time, even before they were legally allowed to. This is an article about women soldiers who fought in the American Revolution. And this, this, and this are articles about women soldiers fighting in the Civil War (or serving in other ways – Memorial Day, to me, is just as much about those people working on the sidelines of war, like nurses and so on).

What it’s like to be a female soldier today. (If you click through, there’s a video. It’s not a youtube video and I’m not the greatest at figuring out how to get them to embed. It’s from the New York Times).

This is a piece from NPR about what it’s like to be a female soldier.

Current women soldiers talk about the need for VA hospitals to serve them (also a video). These women were all wounded in their service to this country.

I thank all the men and women soldiers who fought, but I remember today especially the women who fought and gave their lives for our country, even when they weren’t allowed.
