Midwinter Gaming Convention: Milwaukee’s Own Gaming Convention

The Best Games are Played in the Dead of Winter…and Midwinter is Coming.

Disclosure: Have to get this out of the way as per the FTC rules and regulations for bloggers. I’ve been invited (by my cousin) to attend the Midwinter Gaming Convention as a media guest, but regardless, I always and only give you my full and honest opinions. You can trust and know that I’m telling you how it is.

I love my city. I really, really do. It is the perfect size for me and there is always plenty to do – even in the dead of winter! The upcoming Midwinter Gaming Convention is one such thing.

MGC is a gaming convention held here in Milwaukee every January. There is so much awesome packed into this convention I don’t even know where to start.

Here are a few of my favorite parts and highlights of what the four days will include.

  • Board game room with over 1,400 titles

1,400 board games – can you even imagine? I love board games and I am super excited about this part. I am always up for learning new games and checking them out as well. I also have an aunt who collects board games that start with the letter Q. I’d love to peruse the collection and see if there are any interesting ones to recommend to her. There has to be at least one Q board game we’ve never heard of among the 1,400. People have also signed up to run certain board games. Highlights among those events include Cards Against Humanity, Firefly: The Game, The Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and many more.

  • Special Guests from Team Starkid

You may not immediately know who Team Starkid is, but are you familiar with A Very Potter Musical?

Team Starkid is the group behind the wildly popular A Very Potter Musical. Several of the cast members are going to be there, including Lauren Lopez, the actress who played Draco Malfoy, and Joe Walker, the actor who played Voldemort, along with many other cast members from A Very Potter Musical and their other shows as well.

They will have a Q & A session along with an autograph session, as well as screenings of A Very Potter Senior Year, Holy Musical B@tman!, and Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier. As a fan of all things Harry Potter, I find this thrilling. A Very Potter Musical is pretty well known among Potter fans, myself included.

  • Writer’s Day

Friday (January 17th) is going to be something new for the convention. They will be having a Writer’s Day! As a writer myself, I’m obviously very excited about the inclusion of this. There can never be too many opportunities to learn more about your crafts and hone your skills. Some of the workshops and panels include “Writing for Various Platforms and Genres” with Ree Soesbee, “Self-Publishing Methods & Mayhem”, an Interactive Writing Workshop (limited spaces, sign up early), “Avoiding Publishing Pitfalls” with Raechel Henderson, “Build a World – And Have Fun Doing It!” with Lisa Walker England, and more.

  • Geek Trivia Extravaganza

I love geeky things and I also love trivia, as I am full of a plethora of it. Happening on Thursday night, it sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun! Not to mention the fact that there will be prizes for the best team name as well as the top scorers, with the winners receiving four day passes to the convention. There are going to be broad and specific categories for this team challenge. And there’s this fun tidbit also: “In addition to standard trivia questions, Geek Trivia Extravaganza will usually include a picture round, a Name-That-Tune-style audio round, and a matching round, with a Jeopardy-style final question to keep the game competitive until the very end.”

The convention will also feature Live Action Roleplaying, Tabletop Roleplaying Games, Collectible Card Games, and Miniatures Wargaming. Other special guests include Ivan from King of the Nerds, By Night Studios, and Eddy Webb from CCP among others. There will also be an exhibit hall with many vendors for all your gaming needs and an Hour of Power podcast live taping. There’s even a Zumba class with geeky music! The parts of the convention I’ve showcased here are truly just the tip of the iceberg.

It’s definitely not too late to be a part of this great event. MGC will be held January 16th-19th at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. The best part of this is that the event is totally affordable. A full weekend is just $45 dollars, or do just Thursday, Friday, or Saturday for $15 a piece. Can’t make it until Sunday? That’s okay, since Sunday is just $10. And children under 12 are free! This would be a great event to go to with your family or, if you and your significant others are gaming fans, a great date. For everything that’s included, I feel that price is totally reasonable. You can buy your tickets online or you can even get them at the door, in case you decide to go last minute.

You can find more information, including the full schedule of events, more about the special guests, a list of vendors, and hotel and registration information at their website.
