The Man in the Arena

On this day in 1910, Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt gave his famous The Man in the Arena speech. Since it was 1910 and not 2010, I’m pretty sure there were no videos of him giving this speech. Not the day of the smart phone camera recorders 😉

I did find this video though that has a little background on this time in Teddy Roosevelt’s life and then has him reading the most famous part of this speech.

I think this speech resonated and became famous, because it is so easy to criticize the people around us while we sit on our butts and do nothing. But it is the people who get up and do something, they are the one’s actually doing it, not any of the people who criticize them. It is easy for too many people to criticize, for example, someone going out there trying to make the world a better place. Maybe they are not doing it the way you think they should or in a way that you think is effective, but at least they are doing something.

So get off your butt and do something! Be the man in the arena, even if you fail. Because at least if you failed, as Teddy Roosevelt would say, you failed while daring greatly.
